I know this movie came out 4 years ago but I watched it only recently. And I have been obsessed with it ever since. I love this song by Damien Rice, called "The Blower's Daughter". The song came out in 2001, and it was included in Closer in 2004. I just love the song. Have a look -
For those of you who haven't watched the movie..well I wouldn't spoil it. Go watch it and relish it. Its a beautiful movie with real people, real romance and real heartaches.
Some of my favourite scenes.
#1.
Natalie Portman is amazingly brilliant. I could feel the emotions she was goin through as if I have been there myself.
How convenient it is for people to say "sorry" after they have cheated on you. As if that will make things alright. "Not good enough" - like she says. What she says after this is so true "As if you had no choice. There is a moment. There is always a moment. I can do this. I can give in to this or I can resist it." I mean seriously, isnt this always and i mean always true? We all get our moment..that one moment...and what we choose to do with it is our choice. So the term "mistake" becomes invalid, right? Because you did that out of your own free will. Either you ignore your moment (to subconsciously make you feel less guilty at that particular time) or you give in to your moment.
#2. Another of my favourite scenes. Notice the undercurrents -
I love the chemistry between Clive Owen and Natalie Portman in this scene. Its so subtle and yet so alarming. Interestingly enough, Clive owen played Dan's part (Jude Law) in the original play on which the movie is based. The dialogues in this scene are so witty, so clever and yet make so much sense.
A princess can kiss a toad.
- Frog.
- Toad.
- Frog.
- Toad. Frog. Lobster. They're all the same.
I chuckled :)
Natalie Portman at her best.
-He's very pretty.
-She's very, tall.
-So, you're a stripper.
-Yeah, and?
I rewinded the scene while watching the movie and watched it thrice. I was thinking why did she become so sad after Larry (Clive Owen) left (He was about to kiss her but didn't). Was it because it reminded her of what transpired between Anna and Dan? The fact that Larry could resist his temptation and Dan couldn't (having kissed Anna in their first meeting when he was supposed to be in love with Alice). Did it bring to her the contrast, the reality, the shortcomings of her own lover? I will never know for sure.
#3. And this last scene is again one of my favorites.
- I dont love you anymore
- too late
Isn't this the way how it happens? Always. Especially if its a long serious steady relationship. You give so much of yourself, you go all the way to make it work, you compromise (sometime without even realizing it) and then one fine morning you wake up and realize that in the midst of it all, you stopped loving the person. No matter how hard you try, you can't reverse it. In all probability you still care for the person but you are not in love with him/her. Its beyond your control. Even if the person assures you how much he/she loves you (something which you always wanted to hear earlier), it doesn't matter. Nothing matters anymore. You don't "feel" it and that's it. THE END. It might come as a shock or a surprise to the other person. Personally, I believe that its selfish on his/her part to be so ignorant about it throughout that he/she didn't think what you are going through and how much this all is affecting your psyche. Or maybe he/she is just too complacent and takes you too much for granted to actually realistically believe that you can stop loving him/her at some point of time.
I hope I can get over the movie. Someday.
